On the morning of June 2nd, 2007 a personal friend of mine suffered a heart attack and passed on to his rest. You of the wrestling world and those of you that knew him from his world famous "Flea Markets" knew him as Sandy Barr. However I called him little brother and friend. There will be much written now about Sandy after his passing. I suppose that if you really came down to it , his life would cover a million pages or so. We here on our humble site want to remember him as a fine gentleman and a good man.
We will honor Sandy by this special page on this site, he more than deserves it.He is the only other wrestler besides the great Bull Ramos that we so honor here at this time. Sandy's legend will be remembered long after this humble article will be written about him. You loyal fans out here I know will think of Sandy often, and I hope there is a smile in your heart about the way he conducted himself through this life. He was almost impossible to anger, slow of temper, kind in manner and loyal as the "needle is to the pole". If you needed help he was willing, if your mindset was sad he would try to cheer you. Many is the man and woman he has helped monetarily as well as spiritually.
I have called as many of the men who are still with us who were associated with this fine man as I knew of,, and,, the first thing out of their minds and mouths was,,,"Oh no, not Sandy, we have lost a great one". The guys of our era have all had the pleasure and good fortune to know Sandy and the "right spirit" he always carried with him.
He was greatly loved and will be greatly missed by, we who he has left behind. my heart has an empty spot it in now that he is gone,,,our hearts go out to his family left behind and this old world will miss one of it's finest sons. I will miss him most,,,he was one of the last TRUE friends I had on this planet,,,,may you rest easy Sandy,,, you made this place a better globe with your presence on it,,, thanks for all the love and kindness you have show unto me,,, I have loved you and will miss you terribly,,,God rest you my friend,,,, brother Dutch
I first met Sandy Barr around 1970. What you saw was what you got with Sandy. He was always the same Sandy. When one thinks of Portland Wrestling they always think of Sandy. He was a lot more than the referee for Portland wrestling. He was a true professional who really loved the sport. I had the privilidge of doing an interview with him for this website. He loved the sport of professional wrestling and I could tell that he truely cared for the men who were involved with that sport. What I also saw was a man who cared about the people who walked into his flea market. Believe it or not business was going on as usual at the flea market the day of our interview and Sandy was very kind to his customers. Sandy truely was a major factor in creating the magic that was Portland wrestling of the 70's and early 80's that will never be duplicated thanks Sandy for the memories rest in peace. I am in business with the public as well and I can tell when it is an act and when it is from the heart. With Sandy it was from the heart. He made me feel welcome the day of that interview and I will personally miss him as well. May God Bless his family and Thanks Sandy!!- kevin
